9 Fundamental Steps that have Helped me Achieve My Goals1:12 AM
Where do you want to see yourself in ten years time?
Do you know what is it you want to achieve in the near future?
Have you been able to carry out the goal you set for today?
I've often observed people having dreams and bucket list of goals to change their lives, but are either unwilling to put in the required effort or too scared to even get started. I am hoping this post will be the wake up call that some of you needed, and also act as an encouragement for those already in the pursuit of their goals.
Below are some of the steps I follow to realize my goals. It took me a few years to figure these out, but I guess it's better than whiling away precious hours.
1. Take Risks
This is one area I struggled a lot and still do on rare occasions. Taking risks seemed frightening to me. I was unwilling to take risks. avoiding it outright. I looked at risks as though, they were some horrible monsters all set to swallow me up if I approached them. But in the past four to five years, I convinced myself to get out of my comfort zone.
It was time to advocate for myself. The outcomes were worth the risk. I gained a lot more in terms of self-development and finding my purpose in life. We all avoid challenges simply because we tend to focus a lot on what could go wrong. We dramatize the consequences of taking risks. Next time you find yourself playing safe ask yourself, "Is this the life I want for myself?"
2. Avoid Procrastinating
Have you been promising yourself for days, weeks or months, "I will start tomorrow",but tomorrow never seems to come? Do you keep putting things off until the last-minute?
We can all relate to this. At times it's understandable to postpone something so as to complete another work of yours that requires your immediate attention. But what about the things we keep telling ourselves, the pretexts we make,
"I still have time, I can do it later"
" I'll watch this movie then start to work on it"
"Let me check my email before I get started"
"Oh I need to eat something"
Time is fleeting while we procrastinate. Time lost can never be regained.
Remember while you're putting things off, you're consciously/unconsciously giving away your chance at being successful in life.
3. Work Consistently
Have you ever tried splitting a log? Does it get split in one hit? NO
But if you hit it repeatedly it will eventually split.
Similarly any goal can be achieved through continuous action.
There is a belief that anything done for three weeks in a row turns into a habit.
Personally, this has worked for me and blogging is one of them. Initially I had to convince myself to sit and write. Two months since, blogging has become a habit I can only be pleased about it.
The key is consistency. Whatever it is you want to achieve do it over and over.
Persevere and keep a steady pace until you obtain what you're looking for.
4. One step at a time
You can only take one step at a time. The goals you set yourself can be overwhelming, but if you rush into things it will only make matters worse.
I prefer being steady and reflect upon every stride I take. It puts me in a better place for my next step. It doesn't matter how big or small your step is as long as you're moving in the direction of your goals.
5. Tell others about your goals so you have support
Just like the saying goes "It's very easy to talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?"
Similarly making goals is very easy, but can you stick to it and see it through to the end?
That is why I tell people about my goals.
Some will support me others might discourage me. The final call is mine.
It doesn't matter if I failed in achieving my goal. Telling people about my goals actually motivates me. For those who know me on FB would be aware by now that I put up motivational posts every morning. While I advice and inspire others, I believe in practicing what I preach.
6. Tie your goals to your values
Our values play a pivotal role and is the underlying factor that helps us achieve our goals.
In order to make your values a reality you need to tie those to your goals.
For instance, I value boldness, bravery, commitment, compassion, discipline, humility, generosity, awareness, gratitude and many more. My goals revolve around these values.
Does your goal match your value? If it doesn't, it's time to take a step back and weigh your goals against your values.
7. Set your eyes on the end vision
Having a clear vision of the end result is a great motivator to get you started and keep you going until your goal is achieved.
The road leading to your goals can be arduous but that shouldn't make you lose sight of what you want.
Remind yourself that your dreams and aspirations are valid. Reinforce your beliefs so you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way.
We all want to do great things.
But how much are we willing to sacrifice to accomplish our goals?
I remember when my husband and I were planning to come to Australia,we contemplated days on end before reaching a decision. We had this strong desire to explore the horizons. But I felt mentally unprepared to leave family and friends and give up my job.
One fine morning I woke up thinking "This will be an experience of a lifetime, worst case scenario being, going back home".
I didn't want to live life with regrets.
Ultimate truth :- You often have to sacrifice something to get something.
9. Track your Goals
Do you feel like some of your New Year's Resolutions have taken a back seat?
Did you write down your goals somewhere but can't find it anymore?
No problem. Make use of your smartphone. Did you know there are apps to help you keep track of your goals? I have used "Reach Your Goals" Android App for the past one year now and I must say it has worked wonders for me. It's user-friendly with a clean set up and in my opinion very efficient in maintaining your goals.
Remember....You are the maker of your own destiny. Do not limit yourself.
You are never too old to set yourself a new goal.
Dream big and aim high.
Believe you can achieve your goals and YOU WILL!
